Easter! 31.03.17

We have had a very busy week this week in Lime Class!

On Monday we watched the Year One's play 'There's a sunflower in my supper', it was fantastic! Well done Oak class and Beech class.

On Tuesday we continued our work on Easter and thought about how different people celebrate. We watched a video and found out how Toby celebrates and compared this to what we do with our families. Miss Howells brought in some hot cross buns for us to try at snack time, they were very yummy.  "The cross on the top of a hot cross buns reminds us that Jesus died on the cross."

On Tuesday afternoon we had our last celebration assembly before the Easter holidays, Lime class won the recycling award and the library award. We are very proud of ourselves! A BIG thank you to Christine and Jean for taking us to the library every Monday, we enjoy choosing new books to share at home.

On Wednesday we learnt about weight. We looked at different size objects and said whether we thought they were heavy or light. We then put them in the balance pans to see if we were right.

In morning activities this week we have been using our cutting skills to make an Easter basket. We cut out a net and then folded and glued the edges to stick it together. Miss Howells said that our cutting has really improved and that lots of us were really persevering!

Today we had an Easter egg hunt, we looked for different coloured eggs in the outdoor area and put them in our baskets. It was lots of fun!

There is no home learning this weekend as we would like you to take part in the FORIS Easter Challenge. Please bring your cress creations into school on Tuesday 18th April to be judged. We look forward to seeing all the different ideas you come up with.

We hope everybody has a lovely break and we look forward to hearing all about what you have been up to when we come back to school. Take care and stay safe!

The Easter Story 24.03.17

This week in Literacy we have been learning about Easter. We shared what we know about Easter and read the Easter Story. We all chose a picture from the story and  wrote a sentence about it. Miss Howells was amazed by our fantastic recall and writing!

In Maths we have been learning how to write our numbers. We used the door website: http://www.doorwayonline.org.uk/literacy/letterformation/ to find out about the different formations and had a go at writing them in the air and on our whiteboards. Lots of children have number formation as there next step so have been practising these in learning through play.

In Music we learnt a rhyme about the Easter bunny. We practised responding to different symbols: loud, quiet, fast and slow and played along using claves. It was lots of fun, especially when we got to sing really LOUD!

During morning activities we have been busy making a special gift for our Mummy's. We hope they have a lovely relaxing day on Sunday.

This weeks Learning Owl is Lucas he has been chosen for really challenging himself in his learning. Well done Lucas, we hope you enjoy your weekend with Hootie.

Our home learning this week is to find out about Easter and write a sentence. I wonder if Miss Howells will learn anything new?

Poetry 17.03.17

This week in Literacy we have been learning about Poetry.
Here are some of the things we have found out about poems:
- Some poems rhyme and some don't
- You sing them like a song
- They have lines and verses
- They have a theme
We read three poems which were all about space. We generated actions to go with the poem and performed them as a class.

In Maths we continued our work on subtraction. We enjoyed sharing our home learning and singing the number songs together as a class. Ten green bottles was the most popular song!

On Wednesday we took part in a tennis taster session. We played lots of games including: walk the dog, hot dogs and sharks. We also had a go at hitting the ball over the net. It was lots of fun! Reception children will be able to take part in the tennis club on Thursday morning in the summer term so don't forget to sign up!

In PE we have been learning how to do a bunny hop. We used our bunny hops to travel along and over the apparatus.

This weeks Learning Owl is Indie. She has been chosen for her positive attitude towards her learning. Well done Indie, we hope you enjoy your weekend with Hootie.

For home learning this week we would like you to design a poster for the Herts Show on the theme 'I Love Hertfordshire.' This can be done using a picture,  painting or photograph.

Subtraction and Space 10.03.17

This week in Maths we have been learning about subtraction. "Subtraction means to take away and when we subtract the total gets smaller." We sang 'ten little speckled frogs' and 'There were 10 in the bed' and practised taking different numbers away from 10. We used our fingers to find the answer and practised counting back on a number line. We all had a go at writing number sentence using the subtraction and equals signs.

We have also been finding out about Space. We enjoyed sharing our home learning and telling each other all the things we had found out. We looked at a PowerPoint about the solar system and had a go at writing a fact. "A fact is a short piece of information." In welcome we painted the planets in order and wrote their initial sounds to label them. We also learnt a rhyme to help us remember the order.

In P.E. we made up a teddy bears picnic dance. We thought about how a teddy bear would move and what they might do when they get to the picnic. We worked with a partner and created a sequence of movements.

This weeks Learning Owl is Benedict. He has been chosen for really persevering with his writing. Super work Benedict, we hope you have a great weekend with Hootie.

We will be continuing with subtraction next week so for home learning we would like you to sing number songs and practise taking away.

Our fantastic sharing assembly! 03.03.17

Today was our sharing assembly.  We all remembered our words and used big loud voices. We talked about all the things we have learn't this term and sang two songs. "We loved it!"
Thank you to everybody that came to watch, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

This week was book week so we have been doing lots of book related activities. In Literacy we read the story 'Can't you sleep little bear' and wrote a sentence about it. We made sure to use a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end and tried really hard to remember our finger spaces. Miss Howells showed us some writing without finger spaces and it looked really funny.

Across the week we have listened to each others favourite books. There were lots of different types of books, some with stories and others with facts and information. Some of the stories we had heard before and some of them we haven't. Miss Howells favourite story is 'The Tiger That Came to Tea.'

On Wednesday we made head bands for World Book day. We drew a picture of our favourite book character and explained why we liked them. "All the teacher made one too, they looked really good!"

In Maths we did some problem solving. We listened to a story about Mrs Muddle who had got in a muddle when baking cakes for a 5th birthday party. We talked about what we could do to help her and worked in our animal groups to solve the problem. We re-arranged the slices of cake so that each cake had five cherries on top.

On Tuesday we took part in a light and dark workshop. We explored reflections using a torch and mirror, created our own puppet shows, looked through a periscope and made our own kaleidoscopes. "It was awesome!" A BIG thank you to all the parents that came to help.

This weeks Learning Owl is Ethan. He has been chosen for trying really hard with his writing. Well done Ethan, we hope you have lots of fun with Hootie.

Next week we are going to be learning about Space so this week for your home learning we would like you to find out facts about the solar system.
