The Rainbow Fish 27.01.17

As part of our Kaleidoscope topic we wanted to find out about fish so this week we have been fish explorers.

In Literacy we read the book 'The Rainbow Fish.' The story  is about a fish who has lots of beautiful shiny scales. At the start of the story the rainbow fish won't share his scales but after becoming very sad and lonely he begins to share them with the other fish. He feels very happy and makes lots of new friends.

We looked at a picture of the rainbow fish and generated sentences to desscribe him. Here are some of them:
" The fish is colourful."
"The fish has shiny scales."
"The fish is pritty"
"The fish was unkind to the little blue fish."
"The fish was kind when he shared his shiny scales."

We also used the story in circle time to talk about what makes a good friend. We decided that a good friend is kind, caring, helpful, friendly and happy.

At snacktime we have also enjoyed listening to other fish stories. We thought 'Tiddler' was very funny because he kept on making up stories and after reading 'Sharing a Shell' we researched what a sea anenome and brush worm are. We learnt that clown fish aren't stung by sea anemones but humans are.

This weeks Learning Owl is Chrisanthi. She has been chosen for really persevering with her writing. Well done Chrisanthi, we all hope you have a fantastic weekend with Hootie.

This weekend is the RSPB big bird watch so for our home learning we need to spend some time watching which birds come in and out of our garden. I wonder if anyone will spot a robin or a red kite?

Elmer 13.01.17

This week in Literacy we read the story of  Elmer. The story is about an elephant called Elmer who is different to all the other elephants. Elmer isn't grey, he's patchwork. We designed our own elephants for 'Elmer Day' and wrote a sentence about them. Miss Howells and Mrs Hyder were very impressed with our writing. We all used our phonics to sound out words and lots of us remembered to put a full stop at the end of our sentence.

In learning through play we have enjoyed making Elmer pictures, paintings and books. We are also making a big Elmer for our classroom display!

In Maths we practised ordering numbers, We thought about which number was the smallest/ biggest and put them into order. We played a game called Caterpillar ordering with numbers to 10 and 20.
Here is the link so you can play at home: http://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/caterpillar-ordering

In Music we learnt a song called '5 elephants on a piece of string.' We took turns to balance on the piece of string and practised keeping a steady beat with different musical instruments.

This weeks learning owl is Mollie. She has been chosen for persevering with her Elmer painting. Well done Mollie, we hope you enjoy your weekend with Hootie!

This weeks home learning is to find out facts about elephants and write a sentence. I'm looking forward to hearing all the interesting things you find out.
