Scientists 24.02.17

This week in Lime Class we have been scientists. We read a book called 'Mix it up' all about colour mixing and carried out two investigations.

On Monday we put different colour skittles around the edge of a plate and poured warm water over the top. We made predictions about what we thought would happen and then observed the results. "The colours came off the skittles and made a rainbow on the plate." It was amazing!!

On Tuesday we thought about what was inside a felt tip pen. We all thought they had ink inside but we weren't sure if there was just one colour ink or lots of different colours. We drew a thick line on a coffee filter with different colour felt tip pens and dipped the coffee filter in some water. The water went up and made the colour spread. We found out that some of the inks had other colours in them too. Black was the best - we saw blue, red, and purple!

In Maths we learnt how to double a number.  Doubling means you add the same number again. "Double 3 is 6."
"Double 2 is 4."
"Double 1 is 2."

Next Friday is our sharing assembly so we have been thinking about what we would like to say. We all have our words in our book bag to practise over the weekend.

This week’s Learning Owl is Beatrice. She has been chosen for her fantastic 'I can do it' attitude towards her reading. Well done Beatrice, we hope you have a fantastic weekend with Hootie.

Next week is Book Week so this week for home learning we would like you to write about your favourite book.

William Morris 09.02.17

This week we have been learning  about William Morris. We did some research for our home learning and looked at a PowerPoint about his life. We found out that he was a designer and that he made stain glass windows, tapestries and wall paper prints.   We looked at some of his designs and shared our thoughts and opinions on them. Lots of us liked his wall paper because it uses different colours and patterns.

We took his print 'The Strawberry Thief' as a starting point and did lots of different activities related to this across the week. In welcome we used watercolour pencils to draw birds, flower, leaves and strawberries and in Art we created our own polystyrene printing tiles. We used rollers to cover our tiles in different colour inks and then printed them multiple times to create our own William Morris wall paper. Mrs O thought they were fantastic and has taken some to put on the display in the hall!

On Tuesday it was Safer Internet Day. We talked about how to stay safe online and what to do if we have a problem. We learn't a song to help us make sensible choices when using the internet:
'Before you click, click, click,
You need to think, think, think
and TELL someone.'

Next week is half term, we hope everybody has a lovely break and we look forward to seeing which of the '33 things you can do outside' you manage to do. Have fun and stay safe!

Numbers, number, numbers 03.02.17

This week in Maths we have been learning about addition. We found out that you can use lots of different resources to help you add two numbers or two groups of objects together. We explored using bead strings, objects, number lines and numicon. We learnt actions to help us remember what the add and equals symbols look like and had a go at recording our number sentence pictorially.

On Wednesday we went down to our Woodlands area. We worked in groups to build a den, made mud soup and mud pies in the muddy kitchen and used cheerios and pipe cleaners to make bird feeders. We got very muddy but it was lots of fun!

Today is NSPCC number day so instead of wearing our school uniform we are wearing something with a number on it. We have been using our number to solve problems and sort ourselves in different ways.

This weeks Learning Owl is William. He has been chosen for his fantastic attitude towards his learning. Well done William, we hope you enjoy your weekend with Hootie!

Next week we are going to be learning all about William Morris so for your Home Learning we would like you to do some research. Who was he? What did he do? Do you like his designs? Why/ why not?
